SUMMARY:2016/17 PA Days at the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre
DESCRIPTION:Want to provide your child with some fun\, unique learning experiences that connect the arts with the culture and history of working people in Canada? Look no further than our popular PA Day programs! Our full day camps are facilitated by professional artists and educators\, and include a wholesome lunch and snacks throughout the day. \nNovember 4th\, 2016     Machines\, Large and Small   with Cornelia Peckart \nIn this day of camp\, kids will experience the magic of the pumphouse at the Museum of Steam and Technology\, guided by interpreters who will explain how their important steam-powered pumping engine delivered water across Hamilton many years ago. In the afternoon\, children will go back to WAHC and inspired by our exhibition Patternmaker\, will explore how gears\, pulleys and the human body are vehicles for motion and speed through drawing\, painting and the creation of small\, kinetic sculptures.\n \nDecember 2nd\, 2016     Comics to EmPOWER   with Georgia Webber \nWhile most people read comics with superheroes and villains\, there has always been a great power in the comic arts to communicate real life. When writers tell their own stories\, or underground comics help people organize social movements\, comics are undeniably powerful\, just like the people who create them. In this camp\, we will find our comics voices and celebrate the heroes in our everyday lives! \nJanuary 27th\, 2017     Telling Textiles  with Hitoko Okada \nInspired by the banners in our winter exhibition Fabric of Resistance\, this camp will teach explore how people can communicate through combining images\, words and fabric. After learning some easy tricks to working with textiles\, kids will make big and small banners that both show and tell their ideas for making the world a better place for everyone. \nJune 9th\, 2017     Working Kids’ Blues   with Treasa Levasseur\n \nIn this fun-filled hands-on musical camp day\, participants will explore various instruments\, learn to sing some traditional union and work songs\, journal their ideas\, and ultimately create and record their own blues song inspired by art in our main gallery exhibition. Working Kids’ Blues takes place over Hamilton Arts Week\, an annual civic celebration of the arts. For more information about Hamilton Arts Week and it’s many offerings across the city\, visit the Hamilton Arts Council’s #HamArtsWeek website. \nFor ages 6-12; pre-registration is required. Admission for each PA Day session is $20. Subsidized spots are available—no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. For more information or to register\, download and fill out out a registration form (doc and pdf formats) or contact Tara Bursey\, Program Coordinator at (905) 522-3003 ex. 29 or tara@wahc-museum.ca. \nPA Days at WAHC are made possible through the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
