Art S.E.A.L.S: Survival Skills Training brings together eight artists from Hamilton and Windsor, Ontario for a series of demonstrations and discussions to be hosted at art galleries and non-traditional public venues in both cities. Art S.E.A.L.S explores the relationships between artistic and non-artistic labour, seeking to engage and broaden current discussions on the value of arts, culture and artistic labour within the communities of Hamilton and Windsor.

The title of the work references the United States Navy SEAL program, an elite commando squad recognized for their ability to operate in harsh and unforgiving environments – much like the harsh and unforgiving labour market landscape of the 21st century. Rather than standing for Sea, Air and Land as the military acronym does, Art S.E.A.L.S stands for Art Skills Exchange and Learning Series.

The project seeks to not only illuminate the economic challenges faced by artists in order to maintain their professional practices, but to relate these challenges to projects and discussions being held in artistic communities across the province.

The Hamilton exchange will take place May 2nd & 3rd, 2014 and will feature participating artists from Windsor and Hamilton, in a series of public demonstrations on skills they have used or developed to sustain a living outside of their artistic practice at the Workers Arts &
Heritage Centre as part of the Centre’s May Day programming.

During the same weekend, artists will also engage the public in demonstrations of arts skills utilized in their artistic practice at the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. The Windsor exchange will take place in October 2014.
