Organized by the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre in partnership with the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, this dynamic exhibition presents an overview of some of the people and practices that make up Southern Ontario’s heritage building trades community.

Filled with examples of work, materials, tools and the stories of tradespeople past and present, Building Our Futures, Preserving Our Pasts offers a unique survey of heritage trades in the 21st century – carpentry, stonemasonry, roofing, blacksmithing, plastering and faux finish painting are all represented – and the way they continue to impart knowledge and preserve valuable skills to future generations, remain as viable avenues of gainful and meaningful employment, and continue to influence the way we experience the unique character of our region, our cities and our communities. The workers and tradespeople showcased here represent a continuous legacy of human achievement and a direct link to our region’s past and to the people who quite literally laid the foundations of our ancestors’ homes, framed our institutions and forged our identity as a people.

The Workers Arts & Heritage Centre is grateful for the generosity and support of CAHP and OAHP member companies in providing labour, materials, tools, work examples, photographs, videos and expertise in creating this exhibition.
