Come explore Custom House, the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre's historic home, and experience some special drop-in programs in honour of Doors Open Hamilton 2016.

Over Doors Open weekend, come learn about the work of two local artisans! Aimee Burnett of Pedlar Stock Shoes and Anna Zygowski of Anna Kari Fine Knitwear will demonstrate their craft, show you their tools, talk about the history of what they do, and answer all your questions about knitting, knitting machines and shoemaking in our Main Gallery. These demos are geared towards the whole family, and will include kid-friendly activities.

Aimee Burnett shoemaking demos will run on Saturday, May 7th from 1-3 pm. Anna Zygowski's knitting machine demos will run on Sunday, May 8th from 1-3 pm.

In addition, come and experience our new Worker's City app at an interactive station in the gallery. This app and website, launched last year, presents the rich working and industrial past of Hamiltonians in all its breadth – at home, in the workplace, in the community.

About our Guest Artisans:

Aimee Burnett was formally educated as a graphic designer before learning to shoemaker in Toronto from Nasser Vies. As a designer Aimee has worked in Toronto, San Francisco and Berlin before beginning Pedlar Stock with her partner Gabriel Baribeau. Pedlar Stock began in the Spring of 2014 in Simcoe ON and picked up again in January of 2015 in Hamilton. Pedlar Stock’s workspace is located in Casino on Mary St, a collaborative arts space and gallery of which Aimee is a founding member.

Anna Zygowski has a Bachelors in Fashion Design from Ryerson, a Diploma in Textile Design from Sheridan and a Masters of Arts in Fashion Design from Ryerson. She has taught in the textile departments of OCADU and Sheridan College, and currently runs her own fine knitwear business, Anna Kari, designing women’s wear and selling to boutiques locally and internationally. Anna developed a proficiency in machine knitting following a life long interest in mechanical objects and analog technologies.
