SUMMARY:International Women's Day Performance and Sing-a-long
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a lot to celebrate\, a lot to struggle against\, and a lot to sing about! \nWe are proud to present an International Women’s Day Concert and Labour Song Sing-A-Long in our main gallery. We will be lead in song (some that we’ll recognize and some new) by some powerfully talented women. \nThis event will featuring a slate of local and regional musicians that blend folk\, roots\, rock and soul featuring Sarah Beatty (Hamilton)​\, Janice Jo Lee (Kitchener)\, Piper Hayes (Toronto)\, Mimi Shaw (Hamilton) and hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies Pauline Kajiura! \nCome out and celebrate IWD 2016’s theme\, Pledge for Parity\, ​while​ honour​ing the important contributions of women to ​social movements\, ​labour and song! \nThis event is free. All genders and ages are welcome to attend! \nAccessibility: There is ramp access to the museum on the east side of the building and elevator access to the second floor and basement. Due to the age of our building\, please note that some of our permanent galleries are not accessible due to narrow doorway access. \nThis event is presented in partnership with our friends at SACHA (Sexual Assault Centre\, Hamilton and Area)\, and will follow their annual IWD event at the Hamilton City Hall. \nAbout SACHA: \nSACHA supports survivors of sexual assault while working to end violence in our community. Their programs include a 24-hour support line\, counseling and advocacy\, diverse communities outreach and public education. \n\n\n\nAbout the Performers: \nA songwriter and a scientist\, emerging singer-songwriter SARAH BEATTY is full of surprises. Deftly occupying the space surrounding blues\, jazz\, country\, and soulful styled roots music\, her music shines brightly with dynamic vocals\, imaginative lyrics\, and sing-song melodies. http://www.sarahbeatty.ca \nBorn in New York and raised in Toronto\, PIPER HAYES released her debut solo studio album – a four song EP called ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Like…’ in 2014. Hayes’ inspiration comes from the need to perform\, to heal people through song and to inspire change in herself and her audience. Over the last few years\, she has toured both nationally and internationally. http://pipersings.com/ \nJANICE JO LEE is a singer-songwriter\, poet\, storyteller and community organizer from Kitchener. She sings\, speaks and shares stories about love\, struggle\, and community. She is disarmingly hilarious\, off-the-cuff and fearlessly honest. Lee’s new album Sing Hey is a vocal and acoustic showcase with songs themed on feminism\, poverty and friendship. http://janicejolee.ca/ \nMIMI SHAW is an alt-country artist with a voice that bends the lines of roots\, country and Americana.
