DESCRIPTION:This year we are offering our community multiple ways to mark May Day\, otherwise known as the International Workers Day! \nJoin us in person at Custom House for a double-bill of thinking\, reading and collaborating on more equitable futures for all with our reading club and artist focussed teach in on April 27. Then swing by on May 1\, actual May Day\, to celebrate with with our friends at the HDLC. \nMore info on all the events below! We hope to see you there. \n\nSaturday\, April 27th\, 10am – 12pm: \nBetween the Lines Reading Club\n\nJoin Sara Swerdlyk\, Publicity and Promotions Manager at Between the Lines for the final reading group of the season. \nOur reading club offers physical\, virtual\, and mental space to engage with thought-provoking writing about contemporary issues. Drop in for discussions about books exploring gender\, capitalism\, police abolition\, colonialism\, the housing crisis\, class and more. \nThey’ll be tackling Decolonize Self-Care by Alyson K. Spurgas and Zoe Meleo-Erwin – REGISTER HERE!  \n\n Saturday\, April 27th\, 1 – 4pm: Artists Have Rights Too! \nBeing an artist is hard. It’s a beautiful and satisfying job but there’s so much you need to know about the business of being an artist that no one tells you about. Whether you’re a visual artist\, writer\, musician\, dancer\, theatre maker … or something in between! You deserve to know your rights. Artists\, like so many workers in this day and age\, are expected to fend for themselves. We’re here to help make things a little bit easier. \nIn honour of International Workers Day\, WAHC is partnering with Solidarity Place and Hamilton Artists Inc. to host an artist specific teach-in exploring the ins and outs on how you can better advocate for yourself and understand the resources that exist to support artists and independent contractors. \nThis event is free\, open to all and part of Hamilton Artists Inc’s series WORKING ON IT!\nREGISTER HERE to save your spot today! \n\n \nWednesday\, May 1st\, 5pm – 7pm: May Day BBQ with the Hamilton and District Labour Council\nThe Hamilton and District Labour Council and the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre plan to celebrate May Day at the WAHC with beverages\, snacks\, a DJ\, and a digital activism gallery in solidarity with our comrades around the world! \nAll are welcome!
