SUMMARY:May Day Weekend 2017 at WAHC
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate May Day (a.k.a: International Worker’s Day) and the beginning of the growing season with a series of family-friendly events brought to you by Workers Arts & Heritage Centre and the Hamilton and District Labour Council! \nThis year’s slate of May Day Weekend festivities will allow visitors to create works of art that reflect and honour agricultural workers in Canada and beyond. Drop in to contribute to a monumental work of public art by Dave Hind and the Aluminum Quilting Society\, commissioned for by the city for the Hamilton Farmer’s Market\, or sign up in advance for youth and adult printmaking workshops lead by local artists Matt McInnes and Ingrid Mayrhofer! \nSaturday\, April 29th and Sunday April 30th   |   10 am – 4 pm  |   Drop-In Public Art Studio with Dave Hind and the Aluminum Quilting Society \n\nRaising the Barn is a community-built public artwork made of “quilted” galvinized steel for the Hamilton Farmers Market celebrating and honouring the agricultural community in the Hamilton area. The final work will be unveiled at Art Crawl in July of 2017. Drop in to view this work in progress and make your mark on an 18 foot mural consisting of portraits of farmers and food with the help of Dave Hind and his team of artists. \nSaturday\, April 29th   |   1 – 4 pm  |  Block Printing Workshop with Ingrid Mayrhofer \nIn this workshop\, learn the process of block printing using Softoleum while making prints that consider where our favourite meals come from\, and the workers and tools that allowed our food to make the journey from farm to plate. This workshop costs a materials fee of $10 (sliding scale) and is open to youth and adults 12 and up. Pre-registration is required by phone or email\, or through Eventbrite at this link. \nSunday\, April 30th  |   10:30 – 1:30 pm  |   Printmaking Workshop with Matt McInnes \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn drypoint– a traditional etching technique– to create prints that represent a meal with your family or community. This workshop costs a materials fee of $10 (sliding scale) and is open to youth and adults 12 and up. Pre-registration is required by phone or email\, or through Eventbrite at this link. \nSunday\, April 30th   |   3 – 5 pm   |   Celebration with Fito Molina and the Hamilton and District Labour Council \nJoin us for refreshments and the music of Salvadorian songwriter Fito Molina!
