From 12-4 on Saturday June 8 the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre invite our LGBTQ2S+ community to Celebrate Pride Month at WAHC! We’re taking over the backyard at the Custom House for a garden party, co-presented with Hamilton’s own Fruit Salad. Soak in the sun, take up space and embrace rest as a revolutionary act!
As the famous labour poem Eight Hours by I.G Blanchard puts it: We want to see the sunshine, We want to smell the flowers;…Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, Eight hours for what we will!
There’ll be crafts, lawn games (croquet anyone?), the opportunity to tend to the Stuart Street community garden, and on theme snacks (think lemonade and strawberries). So bring your favourite picnic blanket and grab a couple of friends for an afternoon of fun in the sun! No need to register but if you are interested in taking part in some gardening let us know in advance and you can always RSVP over on at the event’s Facebook page.
Event Update: We are delighted to have local poet John Hill on hand to facilitate a drop-in poetry circle! John will have prompts on hand to inspire folks and help interrogate their relationship to labour, rest and softness. You’ll have the opportunity to share, but there is absolutely no pressure to do so! John Hill (he/they) is a poet, artist, and zinester from Hamilton, Ontario. Hill’s work is inspired by many themes including revolution, magic, community, and narrative. Hill is currently exploring the mediums of zines, poems, collages, and sound art. He is the communications coordinator for Hamilton Artists Inc, and is currently working on their first chapbook. Follow him at @_bedroompunk.
June 8 is going to be a super-sized Saturday at WAHC. It’s the final Second Saturday program of the season and we’ll be screening the film, We Are the Radical Monarchs. More information here.
