Printed Matters!
A March Break Camp for kids ages 8-12 at the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre

Join us at WAHC this March for a unique March Break Camp that gets kids making books, prints and printed matter with a focus on work, neighbourhoods, community and collaboration. Camp runs Monday to Friday, March 16-20th from 9am – 4pm. Admission is $20 per day; admission for all five days of camp is $100. Snacks and lunch will be provided by WAHC. Fully subsidized spots are available—no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Field Notes: Community Scrapbooks    Monday the 16th
with Amy Egerdeen
Kids will tour Custom House and the surrounding neighbourhood in search of inspiration, knowledge and materials about working people and life in Jamesville. In the afternoon, kids will fill small sketchbooks with drawings, found objects and collage at WAHC, as well as learn basic bookbinding techniques.

New Flags   Tuesday the 17th
with Cornelia Peckart
Each country has a flag that uses symbols. Kids will explore the use of symbols in the flags of the world, as well as contemporary symbols in everyday life. They will collaborate on a group flag as well as make their own “new flag” for a country they have a connection to using silkscreen and Styrofoam block printing.

Song Books   Wednesday the 18th
with Tor Lukasik-Foss
After exploring WAHC’s collection of union songbooks and doing basic song writing exercises, kids will come up with songs of their own using existing songs and new lyrics—a strategy used in creating labour songs. Kids will make a collaborative, illustrated songbook with each of their songs in it.

Text and Image: Poster Art   Thursday the 19th
with Becky Katz
Kids will look at posters from WAHC’s collection and learn about the function of posters to educate and command attention. After experimenting with different printmaking techniques, they will make a final poster about something important to them that combines text and image.

Extra Extra!: Broadsheets and Newspapers   Friday the 20th
with Matt McInnes
Kids will explore and learn about newspapers and their function. They will make a broadsheet using drawing, printing and collage of their own news story. After making small print editions on the photocopier, kids will trade broadsheets at the end of the day!
