Originally a one-week exhibition featuring Justseeds which ran concurrent with the 2013 Southern Graphics Conference in Milwaukee, Uprisings: Images of Labour is a series that for Justseeds members, was a return to the essence of what brought many of them in Justseeds together: printing on paper, learning from each other, and sharing resources. This project reflects a variety of conceptual and aesthetic approaches to thinking through labour, from specific struggles rooted locally in Wisconsin, to incarcerated labour, to a reimagining of traditional IWW slogans, such as “Labor Creates All Wealth” and “_____ of the World Unite! You Have Nothing to Lose But Your ____.”

With members working from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers and as a loose collection of creative individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. They believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action. To this end, they produce collective portfolios, contribute graphics to grassroots struggles for justice, work collaboratively both in- and outside the co-op, build large sculptural installations in galleries, and wheatpaste on the streets—all while offering each other daily support as allies and friends.
