PA Day Camps 2019-2020

2019-2020 PA DAYS at WAHC

Want to provide your child with some fun, unique learning experiences that connect the arts with the culture and history of working people in Canada? Look no further than our popular PA Day programs!

Our full day camps are facilitated by professional artists and educators, and include a wholesome lunch and snacks throughout the day. Admission for each camp is $20; full subsidies available; pre-registration is required. November 8, 2019                 Unmasking Invisibility of Workers with Karen Ancheta

Special guest Karen Ancheta will reach into her magic tickle trunk of fun theatre games to explore empathy through play and character creation. Working with masks and storytelling, campers will work together to create short performances inspired by the stories of the migrant workers and their families.

November 29, 2019                A Mural for Honour & Buildings from the Earth with Israel Crooks & Karla Rivera

In the morning, campers will work with painter Israel Crooks to create a colourful, collective puzzle- piece mural that honours the struggle for justice for migrant workers. The final piece will be mounted on our wall.

In the afternoon, art educator and potter, Karla Rivera, will introduce campers in an exploration into clay and hand building techniques to discuss the connections of justice issues between local agricultural migrant farmers and global migrant construction workers.

January 24, 2020                    A Resistance Film & The UN Rights of the Child Zine with Andrés Miramontes and Razan Samara

In the morning, campers will create story scenes inspired by social movements to make a stop- motion animation film. Using collage, drawing and found objects, Andrés will lead campers in creating a collective visual narrative using analog and digital media. Campers will watch the short film they will produce at the end!

In the afternoon, special guest Razan Samara, will facilitate a colourful zine making workshop on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The campers will complete a collective zine highlighting some of articles on the Rights of the Child, and they get to take a copy of their zine home!

March 6, 2020                        Collective Games for Social Change with Jenny Vasquez

Using the images and themes in artist and activist Dylan Miner’s solo exhibition as a grounding point, Jenny will facilitate a fun filled day of theatre games, songs and vocal work, and explorations in movement and sound.

June 5, 2020                           The Rhythm of Work & Workers’ Movement with Glenn Paul and Mecca Samad of Mexx Movement

Percussionist Glenn Paul will lead the campers through a morning session of rhythm and sound games. Using the exhibition content for inspiration, campers will play with soundscapes, circular jazz, and learn work songs through play.

Special guest dance instructor, Mecca Samad of Mexx Movement, will wow campers with an afternoon of movement and dance! Exploring the physicality of factory work, campers will work with some of Mecca’s youth volunteers to create tableaus and short choreographed dances inspired by the work in the exhibition.
